Farm tours – a visit to Karotte & Co
On an early summer’s day, we paid a visit to the organic vegetable farm Karotte & Co. By Yvonne Aßmann
We arrived as a small group to learn more about the farm, the way of working and the products. We learned a lot from the owner, Mr Torsten Fehre: The differences between conventional and organic vegetables. The relationship between producer, consumer and retailer. The necessity of maintaining good soil. The development of a farming operation over generations. The working conditions on a farm. A farm’s entrepreneurial and social responsibilities beyond annual revenue and profit. He answered our many questions passionately and professionally. We were then able to dig around in the soil where the vegetables grow and try freshly picked yellow (red) beets and tomatoes that had been warmed up by the sun.
We also learned about a new type of cooperation between producer and consumer: community-supported agriculture.
Before we left, we sifted through the enormous variety and selected fresh ingredients for our dinner together. Our wonderful slow food day came to a close with a meal consisting of copious amounts of vegetables, which we enjoyed in the garden until late into the evening hours. You can see some pictures of our evening as well as our farm visit here.
